Coupang has unveiled a large-scale customer compensation plan worth ₩1.685 trillion in response to a recent personal data breach, stating that the measure is intended to restore consumer trust.
According to the company’s announcement on December 29, the compensation will be provided to approximately 33.7 million users, including current Wow members, regular customers, and even former users who have withdrawn their accounts. All eligible recipients were notified of the data breach in late November.
Each customer will receive compensation worth ₩50,000, distributed not in cash but in the form of Coupang service vouchers. The compensation will be issued sequentially starting January 15, 2026.
The vouchers will be divided into four categories:
₩5,000 for Coupang general products
₩5,000 for Coupang Eats
₩20,000 for Coupang Travel
₩20,000 for R.LUX (Coupang’s luxury platform)
Each voucher can be used once during checkout within the Coupang app.
Harold Rogers, Interim CEO of Coupang Korea, said in a statement that the company “deeply regrets the concern and anxiety caused to customers by the recent data breach.” He added that the compensation plan reflects Coupang’s commitment to taking full responsibility and reinforcing its customer-first philosophy.
Rogers emphasized that Coupang aims to rebuild trust through concrete action, noting that the company will strengthen its internal systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Coupang will notify eligible customers via text message, and the vouchers can be confirmed and applied directly through the Coupang app beginning January 15. Additional details regarding usage conditions will be provided through a separate notice.
