A deadly fire that killed dozens of people at a ski resort bar in Switzerland on New Year’s Day is believed to have been triggered by party fireworks attached to a champagne bottle, according to survivor accounts.
British media reported that the fire broke out at a bar in the Crans-Montana resort area in Switzerland’s Valais canton. Survivors told investigators that a bartender had lit a decorative firework placed in a champagne bottle, and sparks quickly spread to the ceiling. The flames then engulfed the venue within seconds.
Witnesses said the fire spread so rapidly that there was little time to react. Bottles and decorative materials stored near the ceiling caught fire almost immediately, filling the interior with flames and smoke and throwing the packed bar into chaos.
More than two hundred people had gathered at the venue to celebrate the New Year. As the fire intensified, patrons rushed toward narrow stairways and exits, worsening the panic and confusion.
Video footage obtained by local media shows smoke-filled interiors, people pushing toward exits, and desperate screams as the situation spiraled out of control.
At least forty people were killed in the incident, and more than one hundred others were injured. In the days following the tragedy, mourners have gathered near the site to pay tribute. A temporary memorial has been set up near the road leading to the bar, where flowers and candles have been placed in remembrance of the victims.
Some nearby bars and shops voluntarily closed their doors to join in mourning.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and to assess whether safety regulations were violated.
